Yellow-Crowned Night Heron Nyctanassa violacea
Yellow-Crowned Night Heron Nyctanassa violacea
As this specie is most adapted for feeding on mainly hard-shell crustaceans such as crabs and crayfish, it was introduced into Bermuda to bring land crabs under control there. It is now common in the southeast and a permanent resident in south Florida, where it is found in coastal areas, cypress swamps, mangroves, bayous, streams and shallow tidal waters.
Referred to as a night heron, it hunts mostly at dusk and during the night, but also forages by day, also feeding on frogs, mollusks, insects and fish.
