White-Breasted Nuthatch Sitta carolinensis
White-Breasted Nuthatch Sitta carolinensis
A bird of mature deciduous forests from southern Canada to south Mexico, it is territorial throughout the year with pairs staying together.
In winter it gains protection from predators by flocking with other birds such as chickadees, as 60% of their diets are seeds. In summer, however nearly 100% of their diets are insects.
Nesting in natural cavities, and unlike the Red-Breasted Nuthatch it will prefer old woodpecker holes, although it may excavate its own cavity fifteen to sixty ft, above ground.
