Semipalmated Sandpiper Calidris pusilla
Semipalmated Sandpiper Calidris pusilla
This very small and plain sandpiper may migrate from New England to South America in a nonstop flight, covering over 2,000 miles. Nesting in the Artic Tundra near water this small and abundant shorebird gets its common name from the short webs between its toes (“palmated” means webbed).
Forages walking and picking for tiny aquatic insects and crustaceans, it is seen on mudflats and beaches, depending on a few key stop over points in migration.
