Sandhill Crane
Grus Canadensis
In the wild the Sandhill Crane can live up to 20 years and over. Mated pairs stay together year round, and migrate south as a group with their offspring, and often mate for life. They migrate through North America with scattered stop over points such as on the Platte River in Nebraska, where at its peak may have over 250,000 birds gathered.
Habitats very with the regions of prairies, fields, tundra, marshes and bogs, as they nest on dry ground close to water or build their nests in water up to 3 ft. deep.
Major food sources are variable as cranes are omnivorous, feeding on insects, roots of aquatic plants, rodents, nestling birds, frogs, lizards, snakes, as well as berries and seeds.
