Ring-necked Duck
Aythya collaris
Taking flight springing up from the water, it can also be found on smaller ponds and wooded lakes as it does not demand the larger lakes for a long take-off run as do most diving ducks.
Diving in waters a few feet deep it forages for seeds, stems and roots of many aquatic plants as well as insects and mollusks.
The chestnut collar is rarely visible in the field and is noticeable when the bird is in hand.
The female will remain with the young until they are able to fly, unlike most ducks.
