Red-Bellied Woodpecker Melanerpes carolinus
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Melanerpes carolinus
Most common in the southeast preferring swamp and riverside habitats, the Red-bellied Woodpecker has extended its territory northward.
Feeding mostly on insects, it will also feed on nuts, seeds and occasionally on small bird eggs and tree frogs. Often feeding on sunflower seeds at bird feeders it has adapted to suburbs and city parks, perhaps enhancing its northward movement and its increase in population. European Starlings take over a substantial number of nesting cavities evicting nearly half of all Red-bellied Woodpeckers in some areas.
