Piping Plover Charadrius melodus
Piping Plover Charadrius melodus
A small pale shorebird of open sandy beaches and alkali flats the Piping Plover is found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, as well as well as inland in the northern Great Plains. As a breeder it is now gone from the Great Lakes region due to human disturbance and is suffering on the Atlantic coast for the same reason. Floods from dam releases affect those breeding in the interior habitats. The direct cause of human disturbance and other threats have placed this species on the Endangered list as well as threatened in all parts of its range.
