Pectoral Sandpiper
Caldris melanotos
“Pectoral” refers to the inflatable air sac on the male’s chest that it puffs out in mating display flights during breeding season in the Artic Tundra. Its mating display is accompanied with series of hollow hoots, offering some of the most unusual sounds heard in the summer months.
The Pectoral Sandpiper is most at home foraging on insects, flies and larva on mudflats containing short grasses and weedy vegetation.
