Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata
Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata
A dabbler of shallow fresh marshes as well as tidal estuaries the Northern Shoveler uses its spoonlike bill to strain food from muddy margins. Feeding mainly on seeds and aquatic plants, it also eats crustaceans, insects and sometimes fish, filtering its food through comblike projections along the edges of its bill.
Northern Shoveler pairs are known to be monogamous as they remain together longer than most ducks. The male will remain with the female through part of the incubation period.
