Marbled Godwit Limosa fedoa
Amongst the grasslands and scattered wetlands, the native prairie areas of the northern Great Plains are the breeding habitat of the Marbled Godwit. A large shore bird recognizable by its long upturned bill, feeds mainly on insects in summer especially grasshoppers, and uses its bill to probe for crustaceans, mollusks and marine worms in salt and fresh water marshes and mudflats along primarily coastal regions in winter.Although there has been some recovery of their population since the market hunting of the 1800’s it is in recent decline as more and more of its nesting habitat is converted to farmland.
