Least Sandpiper
Calidris minutilla
Identified by its small size and yellow legs, the Least Sandpiper is the smallest shorebird in the world. Although numerous, it tends to occur in smaller flocks of dozens or hundreds rather than in thousands like most shorebirds.
The Least Sandpiper forages in a walking and picking method for tiny insects, snails and crustaceans at the upper edges of mudflats and along the drier margins of inland ponds.
Widespread and common it is less dependent than most shorebirds on stopover points during its migration.
