Downy Woodpecker Picoides pubescens
Downy Woodpecker Picoides pubescens
This common and widespread bird is the smallest woodpecker in North America. Found throughout most of North America, it lives in habitats from wilderness forests to urban backyards from Alaska to Florida.
Its smaller size allows it to feed from weed stems for insects that larger woodpeckers cannot. Also feeds on berries and seeds, often visiting bird feeders for seed and suet.
