The American Coot is a tough and adaptable water bird ranging from Canada to Ecuador. It is very duck like as it swims in the open water frequently and found feeding on mostly the plant material of pondweeds, sedges, and grasses as well as insects, tadpoles, fish, worms, snails and crayfishIt is a very aggressive defender of its nesting territory, which is a floating platform of cattails or bulrushes anchored to standing plants.
It is abundant but it is decreasing in the east.
